Style Guides, Standard Measurements, Templated Layers, and More
Documented design standards create a consistent framework for every project, whether drawings are being completed by you or a member of your team.
A 4Dbiz Virtual Design Assistant can help establish, organize, and implement design standards, keeping you from having to reinvent the wheel and ensuring your drawings and documentation remain consistent from one project to the next.
How does 4Dbiz support consistent design standards?
Our Virtual Design Assistants help turn your studio’s preferred drafting and documentation practices into repeatable standards and templates your team can consistently use.
Here’s How We Support You:
Drawing Standards and Style Guides
We can create and maintain internal style guides that establish your studio’s standards for layers, line weights, text and dimension styles, symbols, tags, annotations, naming conventions, page layouts, and other drawing preferences.
Templated Layers
We can establish standardized layers with consistent names, line types, line weights, and other settings based on how your studio organizes its drawings, giving you and your team a ready-to-use layer structure for each new project.
Standard Measurements
We can organize the recurring measurements and dimensions your studio wants to reference consistently across projects, creating an accessible resource for your team to follow when developing drawings.
Drawing Templates, Title Blocks and Page Blocks
We can create reusable drawing templates, title blocks, and page blocks with your studio’s established standards already built in.
File Organization and Naming Conventions
We can help establish and document standards for drawing names, sheet numbers, file names, folders, versions, and other organizational practices that keep project documentation consistent.
Ongoing Standards and Template Updates
If your documentation practices change, we can update your style guides, drawing templates, measure guides, libraries, title blocks, and other resources so your standards continue to reflect the way your team works.
Implementation Across Design Services
Once your standards are established, we can implement them throughout the design work we complete for your studio. This helps ensure the standards you establish aren’t simply documented, but consistently applied across your projects.
General Process Questions
What if I already have established design standards?
That’s a great starting point. Your Design Assistant can work within the standards you already have and help turn them into organized, repeatable resources for your studio.
You can provide existing drawing sets, templates, style guides, title blocks, CAD files, written standards, or examples of past work that reflect how you want your documentation to look and function.
Your Design Assistant can then use those resources to help maintain consistency across future project files.
What if my standards aren’t formally documented yet?
They don’t need to be. Many studios already have preferences and established ways of working without having everything documented in one place.
You can provide examples of drawings you like, existing project files, notes, templates, or other references that demonstrate your preferences. Your Design Assistant can help organize that information into more formalized standards and reusable resources.
Can my Design Assistant help create design standards if I’m starting from scratch?
Yes. If you don’t currently have established design standards, we can help you build a foundation based on your studio’s needs and preferences. You’ll provide input and approve the standards being established so the final resources reflect how you want your studio’s work to be documented.
Can my Design Assistant create templates that we can reuse for future projects?
Absolutely. One of the biggest advantages of establishing design standards is creating reusable resources that make future project setup more efficient.
Your Design Assistant can build templates that incorporate your standard layers, line weights, title blocks, page layouts, text and dimension styles, symbols, annotations, and other applicable settings.
Once established, these templates can serve as the starting point for future projects rather than recreating the same setup each time.
Can my Design Assistant create a style guide for our drafting standards?
Yes. Your Design Assistant can organize your approved drafting and documentation standards into a reference guide your studio can use across projects.
Depending on your workflow, this could document standards for layers, line weights, text, dimensions, symbols, tags, annotations, naming conventions, sheet organization, and other recurring elements.
The goal is to create a centralized reference that makes your standards easier for everyone working on your drawings to understand and follow.
Can my Design Assistant help standardize measurements we use repeatedly?
Yes. Your Design Assistant can help document recurring measurements and dimensions that you want your team to reference consistently and organize them into a standardized measurements guide.
You provide the measurements and preferences your studio wants to establish, and your Assistant can organize them into an easy-to-reference resource that can be updated as your standards evolve.
Can my Design Assistant standardize our existing project files?
Yes. If you have existing files that don’t currently follow the same standards, your Design Assistant can help bring them into alignment with your established system.
Can my Design Assistant customize design standards for different project types?
Absolutely. Not every project needs to follow an identical setup.
If your studio uses different drawing requirements for new construction, renovations, furnishings projects, kitchens and baths, or other project types, your Design Assistant can help create variations while maintaining the overarching standards you want consistent across your documentation.
Can my Design Assistant update our standards as our studio evolves?
Yes. Your standards don’t have to remain static.
As your team identifies better ways of working, adopts new technologies, changes its documentation practices, or adds new types of deliverables, your Design Assistant can update the corresponding templates, style guides, layers, measure guides, and other resources.
This allows your standards to evolve alongside your studio rather than becoming outdated resources that your team eventually stops using.
Tools and Technology Questions
What technologies are most commonly used for design standards?
Interior designers use a variety of technologies to help maintain consistency with design standards. Below are some of the most commonly used tools.
AutoCAD
AutoCAD can be used to establish reusable drawing templates, standardized layers, line types, line weights, dimension styles, text styles, blocks, title blocks, page setups, and other drafting standards.
Revit
Revit templates can incorporate standardized views, sheets, annotations, families, object styles, line styles, schedules, title blocks, and other settings that help maintain consistency across projects.
SketchUp
SketchUp templates, tags, scenes, styles, components, and other settings can be standardized to create a more consistent starting point for modeling and documentation.
Chief Architect
Chief Architect templates can be customized with drawing defaults, layers, annotation settings, dimension standards, layout templates, libraries, and other studio preferences.
Vectorworks
Vectorworks can support standardized templates, classes, layers, symbols, resources, text and dimension styles, title blocks, and other documentation standards.
Can you work within the technology I already use for design standards?
Yes. Our Design Assistants are trained across a variety of drafting platforms and can work within your preferred technology. During onboarding, we’ll review the platforms you use, your existing templates and standards, and the way your studio currently organizes its project documentation.
If I don’t have a preferred technology for design standards, can you help set that up?
Absolutely. If you don’t have a preferred technology for design standards, we can help you choose one and set it up for you.
How do design standards tasks get delegated?
All delegation happens through the 4Dbiz Portal, our secure, custom-built platform that keeps your workflow organized and communication seamless. This is where you can communicate directly with your dedicated Design Assistant to delegate tasks, share project details, and track progress from start to finish.
Inside the Portal, you can:
Create and Assign Tasks
Submit new tasks with all the details your Virtual Assistant needs, including descriptions, deadlines, step-by-step directions, and any supporting files.
Keep Communication Organized
Each task has its own built-in Task Discussion so conversations, updates, and clarifications stay attached to the right project. No more digging through emails or scattered chats.
Store Logins and Files Safely
Your login credentials and other important details are stored securely in one place, giving your Assistant quick access without compromising security.
Stay Streamlined and In Control
Because every file, message, and update lives inside the corresponding task, you always know exactly where things stand, without having to chase down information.
What do I need to provide to get my Design Assistant started with design standards?
We’ll gather a few key details during onboarding to understand your current workflow, existing standards, and how you want your studio’s documentation to be organized.
Depending on what you already have in place, we may ask you to provide:
Existing Drawing Sets and Project Files
Examples of completed drawings and working files give your Design Assistant a reference for the standards and practices your studio already uses. Sharing notes about what you want to keep, change, or standardize can help establish the direction.
Existing Templates and Standards
Provide any existing style guides, drawing templates, measure guides, layer standards, naming conventions, or other resources you already use.
Technology Access
Login access to the technologies your Design Assistant will be using. All login credentials are securely stored inside your user profile within the 4Dbiz Portal.
