Creating detailed elevations is an essential part of communicating your design intent, but drafting and revising those drawings throughout a project can become very time-consuming.
This is something a 4Dbiz Virtual Design Assistant can take off your plate. Working from your design direction and project information, your Design Assistant can develop and maintain elevations that align with your studio’s standards while freeing you to spend more time on the higher-level creative decisions that require your expertise.
How does 4Dbiz support elevations?
Our Virtual Design Assistants support the development of elevations throughout the design process, from translating initial concepts into drawings to preparing detailed elevations for client presentations, project coordination, and construction documentation.
Here’s How We Support You:
Interior Elevations
We create elevations based on your floor plans, design direction, selections, sketches, markups, and other project information. Elevations can be developed for kitchens, bathrooms, living spaces, bedrooms, offices, and other areas throughout the project.
Kitchen and Bathroom Elevations
We develop elevations documenting cabinetry, plumbing fixtures, appliances, tile, lighting, hardware, mirrors, and other design elements based on your approved selections and layouts.
Custom Cabinetry, Built-Ins, and Millwork Elevations
We translate your concepts for custom cabinetry, built-ins, shelving, vanities, bars, fireplaces, and other millwork into detailed elevations that clearly communicate your design intent.
Artwork Elevations
We create elevations to document artwork placement, scale, spacing, and arrangement in relation to furnishings, lighting, millwork, and other architectural elements.
Finish and Material Placement
We incorporate tile, wallcoverings, paneling, stone, slab materials, paint transitions, and other finishes into elevations to document their intended placement and relationship to surrounding design elements.
Fixture, Lighting, and Accessory Placement
We can document the placement of sconces, pendants, plumbing fixtures, mirrors, hardware, accessories, and other elements that need to be coordinated within the elevation.
Dimensions, Notes, and Annotations
We add dimensions, labels, callouts, material references, and other annotations based on your documentation standards so important design information is clearly communicated.
Elevations for Client Presentations
When elevations are being used to communicate a design to your client, we can develop presentation-ready drawings that help them better understand the scale, placement, and relationship of elements within the space.
Technical Elevations and Construction Documentation
We can develop more detailed elevations to support construction documentation and communicate your approved design to contractors, fabricators, vendors, and other project partners.
Revisions and Updates
As selections, dimensions, layouts, or design details change, we can revise elevations so your documentation continues to reflect the most current design direction.
Documentation Standards and Consistency
We follow your established drafting standards, layers, line weights, title blocks, page layouts, notation styles, and documentation practices so elevations remain consistent across your projects.
General Process Questions
How much design direction do I need to provide when delegating elevations to my Design Assistant?
The more clearly you communicate your design intent, the more accurately your Design Assistant can develop elevations. You can provide floor plans, sketches, redlines, selections, inspiration images, reference drawings, specifications, notes, or any other information that helps communicate what you envision for the space.
As your Design Assistant becomes more familiar with your preferences and documentation standards, the delegation process can become increasingly streamlined.
What information do I need to provide for my Design Assistant to create elevations?
The exact information will depend on the project and how developed the design is when you delegate it.
You may provide:
- Floor plans and space plans
- Existing conditions or as-built drawings
- Dimensions and field measurements
- Sketches and markups
- Cabinetry or millwork concepts
- Finish and material selections
- Fixture, appliance, and lighting selections
- Product specifications and dimensions
- Inspiration or reference images
- Relevant architectural or contractor drawings
- Notes explaining your design direction
All of this information can be uploaded directly to the corresponding project task within the 4Dbiz Portal, keeping the files, instructions, communication, and revisions organized in one place.
Does my design need to be completely finalized before I delegate the elevations?
Not necessarily. The amount of development your Design Assistant can take on will depend on the direction and parameters you provide.
If you’ve already finalized the design, your Assistant can translate those decisions into the appropriate elevations. If the design is still being developed, you can provide your initial direction and use the resulting drawings as part of your internal design-development and review process.
This allows you to delegate the drafting work without giving up control of the creative decisions.
Can my Design Assistant work from sketches or redlines?
Yes. You can provide hand sketches, PDF markups, redlines, screenshots, notes, or other references that communicate the changes or details you want incorporated. Your Design Assistant can use that information to create new elevations or revise existing drawings.
Can my Design Assistant create elevations from my floor plans?
Yes. Floor plans can serve as a starting point for developing elevations, provided your Design Assistant also has the dimensions, selections, design direction, and other project information necessary to accurately represent the space.
Can my Design Assistant coordinate elevations with my floor plans and other drawings?
Yes. Your Design Assistant can reference the related floor plans, reflected ceiling plans, cabinetry drawings, finish plans, and other project documentation to help maintain consistency across the drawing set.
As changes are made, related elevations can also be updated to reflect the latest approved information.
Can my Design Assistant add dimensions, annotations, and specifications to my elevations?
Absolutely. Your Design Assistant can add dimensions, material references, labels, callouts, notes, and other information based on your studio’s documentation standards and the intended use of the drawing.
The level of detail can be tailored depending on whether the elevation is intended for internal design development, client presentation, vendor coordination, or construction documentation.
Can I review the elevations and request revisions before they’re shared with my client or project team?
Absolutely. You’ll always have the opportunity to review elevations and request revisions before they’re incorporated into a presentation, drawing set, or shared with contractors, vendors, fabricators, or other project partners.
This allows you to maintain creative oversight while delegating the time-intensive drafting and documentation work.
Can my Design Assistant update elevations as the project evolves?
Yes. Elevations often require updates as selections are finalized, dimensions change, client revisions are made, or new information becomes available. Your Design Assistant can maintain and revise the drawings throughout the project so they continue to reflect your current design direction.
Will my Design Assistant be able to follow my drafting standards?
Absolutely. During onboarding, we’ll review your existing drafting standards, including layers, line weights, title blocks, notation styles, page layouts, and other documentation preferences. Our goal is to create elevations that feel like a seamless extension of your studio.
