One of the things we love about working with Nan is her positive approach and student mentality. She is always willing to accept ideas and explore new ways of doing things. We value that in both a business owner and a collaborator, and know that the future is bright for our partnership!

1. What inspired you to start GroovyHome?

I was inspired to start Groovyhome because of a volunteer project in the summer of 2015. By that time, I hadn’t worked in design for about 12 years, and our daughter was going off to college in 2017. How could I compete for design jobs after such a long time?

Well, the universe gave me a big clue. Our friend group had a fun idea to secretly renovate the kitchen of some other friends while they were working at camp for the summer. Their poor kitchen had been limping along after many years of feeding their family of 9, plus a bunch of us friends every Wednesday night for spaghetti. We wanted to thank them for their friendship and generosity.

While we waited for them to leave in June, we gathered more volunteers. Then with the help of their eldest kid, we tore out the old kitchen and replaced it with totally new appliances, hand-made cabinets, fresh paint, new flooring and original artwork. No walls were harmed in this project; we kept the existing space intact.

When they got back home, they were totally shocked. The wife’s first words were “I love our town!”

When I saw how the updates made their lives so much happier and easier (praise the stovetop pot-filler!), I knew I was on to something. This project inspired me to start my own design business and update people’s rooms to make their lives better, without knocking down walls, expanding the budget, or adding to the landfill. It was the message from the universe that I’d been asking for.

2. As the Owner and Principal Designer of the business, how do you balance your business responsibilities with the creative aspect of your projects?

I’d say compartmentalization. My strategy every day is to tackle urgent/important tasks first, which are usually not too creative, but I love getting those done before I do the fun/creative parts of my work. If there are tasks I need help with, I reach out to my trusted business coaches, designer groups, and my fractional support team at 4Dbiz.

3. What would you say is your greatest strength as an interior designer and/or as a business owner?

As a designer, my strength or superpower is transforming an existing space into a fresh and functional home, without breaking the bank. My greatest strength as a business owner is being able to see my industry like my people see it, and then offering them an affordable alternative that speaks to their needs.

4. How has 4Dbiz played a role in your success?

Tremendously! Shayna helped me with structuring and pricing my services, and prepping for client meetings. Evelyn has helped me design my website, organize and optimize my marketing channels, set up email automations, and rescued me from the black hole of tech frustration.

We meet designers where they need it most.
